Mostly made in New York City with\u003cbr\u003e\nproducer Thomas Bartlett (Yoko Ono, Florence + the Machine), the\u003cbr\u003e\nalbum’s elegant detail balances the odd magic of the songs with a\u003cbr\u003e\nfierce emotional realism. “Give a Little Love,” written and produced by\u003cbr\u003e\nSufjan Stevens, channels intense longing, its soulful melancholy\u003cbr\u003e\nmagnified by Stevens’s warm background vocals. On “Belle\u003cbr\u003e\nPénitence,” she shares a tender love letter to her husband (The\u003cbr\u003e\nNational’s Bryce Dessner), twisting the mood of lovely surrender with\u003cbr\u003e\nsome fantastically brutal hunting imagery rendered in her native\u003cbr\u003e\ntongue.
