The album’s title itself is a nod to Hilton’s given Sanskrit\nname, an identity she shed completely after high school in\nfavour of the androgynous ‘Charlie’ and Palana’s overarching\ntheme can be summed up by a quote from Hermen Hesse’s\nSteppenwolf, a phrase Hilton cites as a personal mantra: “Man\nis not by any means of fixed and enduring form… he is much\nmore an experiment and a transition”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEnlisting Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait as\nproducer, Hilton freely experimented with diverse sounds and\nmoods - some minimal and some cacophonous - out of the\nconfines of a band structure. ‘Funny Anyway’ is truly stark,\nfeaturing only string accompaniments, with Hilton assuming a\nrole akin to a confessional French chanteuse, while ‘Let’s Go To\nA Party’ is Hilton’s cheeky take on an icy dance track with thick,\nbouncing synths and a chorus that echoes “I’m only happy\nwhen I’m dancing.” Alternatively, tracks like ‘Pony’ harken back\nto the psychedelic strengths of Blouse, saluting bands like\nBroadcast and United States Of America and then there’s ‘100\nMillion’, the sole track produced by Woods’ Jarvis Taveniere that\nrounds out the album in a soft, acoustic and light-hearted way\nwith labelmate Mac DeMarco lending his talents on percussion\nand back-up vocals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis wide range of moods on ‘Palana’ recall several of Hilton’s\nkey influences - the solemn beauty of Nico, the whimsical\nnature of Marc Bolan and the naïveté of Jonathan Richman -\nbut the album is undeniably the work of one artist, perhaps\nbest summed up by the artist herself: “The music on this record\nis diverse, but so is the inside of a person.
